Stuart Island trip

My wife and I went boating last weekend with my son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. It was great. I cant’ even express how beautiful the San Juan Islands are. We visited Stuart Island. A part of the island is state park land but most of it is private. People are lucky enough to live on, and raise their children on, this unique island in the Puget Sound.

We took the trail to the old school house which is now a small library. The tiny cottage where the teacher used to stay is now a museum. Near this historic site is the new school where children are still taught. It goes up to 8th grade and then the graduates move on to a high school in either Friday Harbor or on the mainland.

The original school used go be called the “little red school house” but now they’ve painted it white (Yuk!).

It was a great trip. We were six people on a small boat but it went well. Their two boys got along well. The trip gave my wife and I a chance to get even closer to my son and his family. We are so blessed.

Oh, and one of the coolest things was my son and I boated up from Seattle together where, after a stop over in Port Townsend, we met the rest of the family in Anacortes. Then all of us headed to Stuart Island.

If you ever get a chance to come to Washington State find a way to go boating out to the islands. This is God’s country out here.

And guess what: I didn’t think of Leuk once during the whole trip. Boating on the saltwater is very healing for my soul.
